Connection Health

Connection Health answers whether or not your connection is actively bringing cost and usage data into the CloudZero platform.

The health of a connection answers the following questions:

  • Can this connection retrieve data from a cloud provider?
  • Has this connection recently retrieved data from a cloud provider?
  • Has this connection recently contributed cost data to Explorer?

Additionally, health attempts to provide a diagnosis of:

  • Could the cost data be improved?
  • How accurate is the cost data retrieved?

Health Rates

To determine if a connection has ingested data recently enough, two fields control how far Health looks back.

To view a connection's health, go to Settings > Connections and select the connection. The detail panel shows its health status and ingest activity. It also shows rates that have already been set. Select Edit to see or change the rate settings.

Expected Ingest Rate is, in hours, how often this connection should deliver new billing data to CloudZero.

Expected Days with Data is, in days, how long this connection can go without having contributed a cost item to Explorer.

A brand new connection waits 72 hours before beginning to enforce ingest rates.

Examples

The following connections are in error:

  • A connection was set up 5 days ago and has never ingested.
  • A connection with expected ingest rate of 24 has not delivered new billing data for 26 hours.
  • A connection with expected days with data of 4 is delivering data, but the latest usage date in its cost data is 7 days ago.
  • A connection was unable to connect to the cloud provider.

Custom Connections

AnyCost REST API or AnyCost S3 Bucket connections do not have rates set by default. These connections will not show "Healthy" unless a rate is set. CloudZero does not know how often these connections should produce data. Enabling either rate will enable full Health monitoring. If only one rate is set, the other uses its default: 24 hours for Expected Ingest Rate or 3 days for Expected Days with Data.

Period Health

Connections also show period health for the current and previous billing month.

An active period has attempted ingest in the last 72 hours and appears as Active. Otherwise it will appear as "Has Data" or "No Data" depending on the last ingest for that period. A connection may ingest older periods. This only indicates if this specific period was recently attempted.

Additional information for periods is available, such as the line item counts for each day of the period and the checks performed during the last ingest. These can include which rate sources were used or if optional data was present.

When important checks are available, the Status badge will display a dot and when CloudZero believes the quality of the cost data is affected they will appear as "Needs Attention".

Other Connection Types

Not all connections produce cost data. These connections have a reduced awareness of health and do not report line items. These include Azure and GCP Recommender connections.
